Description: Korean traditions in ceramic art date back 5,000 years. The ceramic arts have continued to flourish, and the exhibition From the Fire: Contemporary Korean Ceramics brought together over 50 artists working in Korea today to explore the evolution and diversity of the craft.

The artists in the exhibition reinterpreted traditional forms and glazes, such as the Korean punch'ông (celadon ware) and Onggi (utilitarian stoneware). Others refered back to the ceramics of the Koryô Period (918 - 1391) and the Chosun Period (1392 - 1910), drawing on Korea's rich traditions during those eras. But none of them are merely rehashing the works of the past. In their own way, each creates truly new and innovative forms while never forgetting the richness of what has come before. One of these artists, Kwon Shin (b. 1947) is renowned for reworking traditional materials and concepts into contemporary shapes that are at once beautiful, intricate, and joyous in their appreciation of the surprises of nature.

This banner features Kwon's Nest (triangle) from 2000. The striking vessel with it's monochromatic glaze and fluted pattern sits dramatically amidst a blue background. The piece is shown to great effect, with it's diamond-shaped, honeycomb-like interior revealing the artist's skill and the delicate texture of the form. One must see the piece in person and take a very close look inside to see the small white eggs tucked away there. Kwon's technical mastery is shown by the piece's elaborate construction process. First, sheets of clay are molded and dried on forms. These are then cut apart, reassembled in new configurations, and fired as one object. The museum's logo in red is printed at the bottom.

The other side of the banner is also blue with yellow and white text that reads "From the Fire/Contemporary Korean Ceramics/March 24 - May 21" and includes Korean characters in white. A red band at the bottom has the museum's name "Asian Art Museum" in white letters.

Provenance: These banners were displayed around San Francisco to promote the Asian Art Museum's exhibition From the Fire: Contemporary Korean Ceramics from March 24 through May 21, 2006. The exhibition was also seen at the Trammell & Margaret Crow Collection of Asian Art, Dallas; Roswell Museum and Art Center, New Mexico; Pacific Asia Museum, Pasadena; Honolulu Academy of Arts; Mississippi Museum of Art; Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg, Florida; University of Oregon Museum of Art, Eugene; and the Anchorage Museum of History and Art.
About the Artist: Kwon Shin (b. 1947) is one of Korea's foremost ceramic artists, known for using traditional materials and techniques in new and innovative ways. Kwon's works stretch the boundaries of ceramic art and are housed in the collections of several major museums around the world.
