Description:
Georges Seurat’s most well-known work is the monumental A Sunday on La Grande Jatte painted in 1884. The Pointillist masterpiece serves as a defining work in Seurat’s oeuvre, but his drawings are not as widely known. The exhibition Georges Seurat: The Drawings showed some 130 of the artist’s beautiful, ethereal drawings and made it clear why his have been called "the most beautiful painter's drawings in existence".
Banners from the exhibition feature a Conté drawing from 1886-87 titled Eden Concert. Conté crayons are square sticks made from a combination of clay and graphite or charcoal. The medium is ideal for underdrawings of paintings or for detailed sketches on rough-textured paper. Capturing the presence of the singing woman on stage and the still of the audience around her, Seurat’s work silently and solidly preserves a fleeting moment. The singer’s voice is silent and remains eternally suspending in the drawing.
Seurat was obsessed with color theory, which he used to create his Pointillist style. Here, despite the simple palette of black charcoal on cream paper, Seurat manages to bring light to the darkness of the Conté. He treats the medium as if it contains an infinite array of color shades within it, filling the paper as he would fill a canvas. His fine lines and controlled smudging combine into a whole that surpasses its parts.
The museum's “MoMA" logo is printed in white on the image. Below the image, red text reads "Georges Seurat:The Drawings/10.28 - 01.07”. It also includes black text that reads “October 28 – January 7/The Museum of Modern Art/MoMa.org”. Fine print at the bottom of the banner lists details about the show's organizers.Both sides of this banner are identical.

About the Artist:
French artist Georges Seurat (1859-1891) was a leader in the Post-Impressionist movement of the late 19th century. His fascination with color theory and how interplays of color shape objects led to a technique called Pointillism. He was prolific as a draftsman as well, and produced a large group of drawings despite a career cut short by his death of diphtheria at the age of 31.
