Description:
Japanese designer Junya Watanabe (b. 1961) has always explored technological advances in fabrics and concepts in his clean, contemporary clothing designs. Combining traditional and new materials with modern structure, draping, and cutting techniques his creations have been described as 'techno couture'. As a designer for Comme des Garçons, his pieces are fixtures of the world’s high-fashion runways.
The exhibition, Stylized Sculpture: Contemporary Japanese Fashion from the Kyoto Costume Institute viewed the work of Watanabe as a form of sculpture, considering the pieces in their static form rather than in motion. The work of fellow Japanese designers like Rei Kawakubo, Yohji Yamamoto, and Issey Miyake were also regarded from this perspective. The result, seen in stunning black and white photographs by Huroshi Sugimoto, is dramatic. A photograph of a Watanabe cotton/polyester dress and bodysuit from his Spring/Summer 1999 collection graces banners from the exhibition. The light, shadows, and angles created in the image stand out against the minimalist black background and the pale, faceless body of the mannequin. The crisp pleats of the skirt are in juxtaposition to the gentle drape of the neckline and billowing, toga-like overhang on the other side of the dress.
The other side of the banner is black with white text that reads, “Stylized Sculpture/Contemporary Japanese Fashion from the Kyoto Costume Institute/Oct 12 – Jan 6”. A red band at the bottom includes the museum’s name in white block letters, “Asian Art Museum”.
