Description: A pioneer of the studio glass movement, Dale Chihuly (b. 1941) transformed the form and function of glass as well as the medium’s standing in the contemporary art scene. Chihuly’s large scale works are his most dramatic, and their vibrant forms transform both architectural interiors and natural outdoor settings.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir once famously quipped, "Why shouldn't art be pretty? There are enough unpleasant things in the world." Chihuly’s glass certainly fits the bill with its awe-inspiring beauty and mesmerizing sway over the viewer. In the presence of his most ambitious works one must question any pre-conceived notions about glass and its limitations as a medium – for Chihuly there seem to be none.

From his early drawings and single vessels, Chihuly went on to create ever more challenging and grander works. One recent example is Mille Fiori a 56-foot long installation. The work is a veritable garden of delights, blooming with tall stalks, swirling floral tendrils, and organically-hued spheres. This banner features a detail of the work which showcases brilliant red stalks, vibrant green grass-like shoots, curving, melting forms, and the iridescence of blue and green spheres.

The other side of the banner is green with black text that reads “CHIHULY/at the de Young - through September 28” and includes the museum’s logo.
Provenance: These banners were displayed around San Francisco from June 14 through September 28, 2008 to promote the exhibition Chihuly at the de Young. The exhibition was seen exclusively at this venue. Another view of Mille Fiori can be seen on 39 banners; 28 banners feature Chihuly’s Persian Wall.
About the Artist: The name Dale Chihuly (b. 1941) has become synonymous with glass art of the 20th century. His explorations of glass as a medium stretch the boundaries of what was once considered possible and led to his fame as a true innovator in the field. He took a material that was generally used for small, intimate pieces and found ways to turn it into a sculptural medium on par with ceramics, clay and bronze. By enlisting a cadre of assistants, he further pushed the art form in a conceptual direction. With the help of his studio assistants, he is able to create the massive, intricate, gorgeously grand works he envisions. Chihuly has the ability to wow viewers as few other artists can.
