Description:
The lighthearted nature of Pop art shines through in these banners from the Crocker Art Museum. The museum created its own Pop art can of Crocker Soup to promote the show American Pop, and the devil is in the details. The museum’s name in recognizable curly script becomes the brandname on this soup label, and the exhibition’s title American Pop serves as the contents. The gold seal that is central to the label contains a drawing of the museum’s façade with fine print that reads “Corcker Art Museum Sacramento California, 1885”.
These banners distill the essence of Pop art, essentially the melding of mass commercialism and fine art. The humble can of soup, elevated to fine art status by Andy Warhol is now an accepted fine art image within the art world. The museum’s own soup can creation pays homage to this history with the recognizable can designed to convey its own advertising message encouraging visitors to see the show. Soup becomes art, art becomes soup.
The soup can sits on a plain white background with the exhibition name in large red lettering below it, “American Pop” and black text below that lists the show’s dates “August 16 – November 2”.Both sides of this banner are identical.
