Description: According to tradition, Buddha was a spiritual being who attained enlightenment. He shared his teachings to help others achieve enlightenment, giving birth to Buddhism. This Asian religion has been practiced for centuries with different iconographies and beliefs developing in different areas.

Buddhism came to Japan via China and Korea around the 1st century, and the Amida Buddha, "Buddha of Infinite Light", became a popular god, promising salvation to all who invoke his name. Amida created a paradise known as the Pure Land where souls could strive toward enlightenment without the pain and suffering associated with earthly life.

It is the figure of Amida that is featured on this banner. The beautifully-carved, lacquered and gilded figure sits calmly at peace on a vibrant orange background. With his eyes closed, he makes a gesture with his hands symbolizng tranquility and reassurance. Yellow letters run down the left side of the banner and read simply “Buddha”. The dates of the exhibition are printed at the bottom of the banner “Jan 31 – Apr 19”. Both sides of this banner are identical.
Provenance: These banners were displayed around Sacramento, California from January 31 through April 19 to promote the exhibition, Buddha at the Crocker Art Museum.
